stonewall riot

New York Daily News, July 6, 1969

She sat there with her legs crossed, the lashes of her
mascara-coated eyes beating like the wings of a hummingbird. She
was angry. She was so upset she hadn't bothered to shave. A day old
stubble was beginning to push through the pancake makeup. She was a
he. A queen of Christopher Street.

Last weekend the queens had turned commandos and stood bra strap
to bra strap against an invasion of the helmeted Tactical Patrol
Force. The elite police squad had shut down one of their private
gay clubs, the Stonewall Inn at 57 Christopher St., in the heart of
a three-block homosexual community in Greenwich Village. Queen
Power reared its bleached blonde head in revolt. New York City
experienced its first homosexual riot. "We may have lost the
battle, sweets, but the war is far from over," lisped an unofficial
lady-in-waiting from the court of the Queens.

The Western Girls, so called because one year they all came as Annie Oakley (these are a group of negro female impersonaters headed by "Corinne the Queen"), are perahps the gayest of all. In evening gowns and wigs they try to outdo the real girls. The ones who top their faces with golden-blonde and flaming red wigs are the funnniest. As for Corinne, she always maintains her regal bearing, explaining, "I'm a real queen, and don't nobody never forget it!" The other girls aren't the least bit jelous, either, but love Corrine dearly because "shes's such a gay cat," and Corinne has genuine claims to majesty. In 1931 she was Queen of the Zulus! That year the King said he was disgusted with women, so he selected Corinne to reign as his mate over all of the Negro Mardi Gras!

Aunt Lizzie

Billie's aunt, who turned him out and "hepped" him to what was happening. Both she and Billie eventually worked out of Lulu White's house.

Basin Street in New Orleans during the late 19th century was lined with great “sporting houses”, the saloons and brothels run by Josie Cunningham, and Lulu White. The district was called Storyville, and was wide open, drawing both the best and worst people.

The best people always struggled, but not too strongly against the idea that they got rich making money from their real-estate leased for whorehouses, their businesses supplying wine, gourmet items, linens, crystal hangings for the pleasure of sinners. But they bravely fought off their doubts.

The doctor closed the suture in the old man’s arm. He winced, looking away.

“Come back in four weeks to take these out,” the doctor said, then handed me a prescription. “Make sure he takes all the antibiotics, and keep an eye on the stitches, if they get infected, bring him back, and we’ll give him a shot.”

“Oh, I hate needles.” Billie said, making a face, as he buttonned what remained of his right sleeve.

The doctor rolled his eyes as he slipped out through the curtain.
